Q&A for UTMⅡ/UTMⅢ torque meter

Torque means torsion force which is applied on the shaft to be rotated. For example, when you use a screw driver or wrench, torque is applied to threads, bolts and so on. If the point of effort is farther, more torque can be applied to the point of action. Therefore, torque can be calculated by multiplying torsion force and distance. Generally, Nm, an international standard unit, is commonly used.
Newton meter is a unit for torque defined by SI. 1Nm is force in vertical direction applied on a specific point, which is one meter away from the point of effort.

There are typical instruments for measuring torque, such as torque wrench etc. However measurement is relatively easy with these instruments because only the torque at the end of the process needs to be measured. However, there are a lot of products whose shafts transmit power continuously, such as a motor, engine, speed reducer and roller. The rotating torque meter is a device which can measure torque on rotating shaft.

RPM stands for Revolution Per Minute.

No! The shaft is sensing part. That means if you cut the shaft, UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ might be damaged or there might be some negative effect on accuracy.

UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ comes with the 2m cable. One side of the cable is connector type (to UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ), and the other is non-connector type.

We calibrate UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ before shipping. Torque values are adjusted to full scale, with an output of ±5V for UTMⅡ & ±10V for UTMⅢ.

No. Even it have leak-tight structure, it is not possible to protect UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ from liquid intrusion completely.

The overload capacity of UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ is 500%. So, the momentary load above the capacity will not damage the product immediately.

The power can be calculated from rotating torque and RPM. TM320 can calculate power automatically. The calculation formula for power is as follows.

Generally a dial gage is used to adjust alignment while the shaft is being rotated slowly.

It depends on degree of misalignment, but UTM will be vibrated. In that case it is dangerous to keep UTM rotating or increase rotation speed. Please check the alignment.

It is not recommended. That may cause inaccurate measuring, or lifetime of bearing may be drastically shortened.

Not necessary in normal cases.(Do consider safety mechanism to stop rotation) However fixing is recommended in cases below:

・When using encoder option
・If you want to raise resonance frequency for high-speed rotation
・If you are using double disc coupling due to less space for bearing post, workpiece vibrates, eccentricity or angle deviation occurs

It is not recommended to use Oldham couplings. In case this type of coupling needs to be used, please fix the body of UTM for safe use.

Since moment of inertia on drive and load (driven) side are different, the torque output will be slightly different as well. So, even though it will not cause damage, please install properly.

No. Please use it under the rated capacity. The overload capacity of UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ are 500% R.O for sure, but it is only for safety purpose.

The min. number of rotations displayable on TM700, TM320 & TM201 is 15rpm during shipment, but it can be changed & set to 2rpm.

If you wish to use it without fixing the main body, we sell rubber type UTMⅢ/UTMⅡ dedicated couplings.
This product uses anti-vibration rubber as elastic absorber, has no mechanical backlash and has good rotation balance. Rubber acts as a damper, thus absorbs vibration for smooth rotation.
If rubber type coupling cannot be used, use single disc type coupling.
If multiple double disc types or slit types are used coaxially with main body fixed, objects in between will be supported by springs and unexpected vibrations will occur. In worst case, UTMⅢ/UTMⅡ/ couplings will be damaged by resonance.
If the main body is fixed and used, do use a coupling that allows both eccentricity and angle deviation, such as double disc type.
Do not use single disk type coupling with main body fixed. Large eccentric reaction force will transmit to shaft, which not only causes measurement error, but also shortens life of UTMⅢ/UTMⅡ main body and causes damage.

UTMⅡ is able to suppress the influence of external noise, but excessive noise may affect measurement. For further improvement, UTMⅢ has variable low pass filter, and is changeable using PC. It also has RS-485 output, which is useful for transfer of noise resistant data.

Please avoid radial load. Not only it affects the measuring results, but radial load to shaft can also damage the bearing and generate heat (thus the bearing will wear off earlier).

If the tightening force and torque are not enough, coupling may slip or disconnect, and thus, accurate torque cannot be measured. Yet, as far as coupling does not slip, tightening torque and force from coupling will not affect measurement results.

No, you cannot. Products are calibrated before shipping, so please change the setting on indicators to change the full scale.

UTM series has a built-in amplifier. In the case of UTMⅡ torque at full scale is ±5V, while for UTMⅢ torque at full scale is ±10V. UTMⅢ also has RS-485 digital output.

The maximum measurable rotation speed of the UTM series rotary encoder option is as follows:
UTMⅢ 0.05Nm～50Nm　　　5000rpm
UTMⅢ 100Nm～500Nm　　 2500rpm
UTMⅡ 0.05Nm～10Nm　　　 4500rpm
UTMⅡ 20Nm、50Nm　　　　 2000rpm

If the high accuracy is not required so much, please select the one with the rated capacity that is 1.4 – 2.0 times higher than the estimated nominal torque. Otherwise, please be careful on overload in case the full range of UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ needs to be used.

Yes. But, please avoid engine vibration to put external load onto the shaft of UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ. Torque, RPM, and Power can be monitored simultaneously by using TM320.

If you wish to use UTM series in a fixed position, do pay attention to shaft alignment and connect it. You may also use centering location type UTMⅢ for easier installation.

It is necessary to adjust the rotation balance and misalignment. If the shaft is rotated at high speed in unbalanced state, UTMⅢ/UTMⅡ main body may vibrate abnormally and damaged due to resonance. Install carefully while adjusting the balance and gradually increasing the rotation speed. At high speed rotation, we recommend type without keyway.

There is protection circuit in UTMⅡ & UTMⅢ, so minor error in wiring will not damage the product immediately. Still, input of high voltage, such as AC100V, will damage the products.

There is a possibility for misalignment. Also, please confirm if proper type of couplings are used.

UTMⅢ has built-in zero correction function to correct zero point using devices such as PC.

Shaft of UTM series has high rigidity & fast response, thus it could capture values that were not captured before. By pairing with our indicator and applying strong filter, you can get similar waveform as before. UTM III has it’s own low pass filter, and you may change it’s setting too.

1) Since torque meter measures torque using twisting of the shafts, there will be angle difference between shaft of the DRIVE side & shaft of the LOAD side. This deviation is described as “torsion spring constant” in the catalog. Thus, attach the workpiece on the same side as LOAD side of torque meter to measure angle.
2) Since encoder detects the angle between the main body & shaft, fix the main body before use. After fixing the main body, use couplings that absorbs eccentricity & deviating angle such as double ouplings or bellows couplings.
3) Angle error also occurs at coupling side, do beware of torsional spring constant of the coupling.
4) If motor with reduction mechanism is used, there could be angle error between angle indicated by motor controller & shaft output.
